SLS, Toothpaste & Canker Sores

Every now and then I learn something that makes me wonder how in the world I’ve never known this. And boy would my life have been easier if I had!

For as long as I can remember, every time I bite my lip or cheek I ended up with a canker sore.  They are so painful! I’ve tried all kinds of remedies to stop the pain and heal them faster, with limited results.  But the last few months I’ve noticed I bite my lip and no canker sore.  And know I know why!

It’s Sodium Laurel Sulfate or SLS. This is a foaming agent found in shampoos, soaps – and toothpaste. It’s simply there because we think foam = clean. But the bad news is it doesn’t help our teeth, but it does strip the protective lining off the inside of our mouths and that makes it much easier for canker sores to occur. Studies have shown the correlation between the synthetic detergent, SLS, and canker sores.

Because the public is catching on, some toothpastes are hiding SLS under other names like:

  • Monododecyl ester sodium salt sulfuric acid
  • Sodium Dodecyl sulfate
  • Sodium dodecyl sulphate
  • Sodium salt sulfuric acid
  • Monododecyl ester
  • Sulfuric acid monododecyl ester sodium salt
  • Sulfuric acid
  • Monododecyl ester
  • Sodium salt
  • A13-00356
  • Akyposal SDS
  • Aquarex Methyl

So, why did I stop getting canker sores?  Last fall I switched my toothpaste to a Young Living brand Thieve’s toothpaste.  I liked the idea of a more natural toothpaste with the power of essential oils, but had no idea the huge canker-sore-free benefit I’d receive with this SLS free toothpaste!  Truly life changing!
Here are two of the four SLS free toothpastes that Young Living makes.
